Understanding trading costs

Consider spreads, commissions, financing and currency conversion together.

Spreads and commissions

The spread is the difference between bid and ask. Commission may be charged by transaction size, lots or other rules; compare it in the context of the account structure.

Holding costs and conversion

A position held across settlement time may incur financing. Different settlement currencies can also involve conversion. Check product and account documents for the actual rules.

Assess the full cost of a trade

Compare the whole cost rather than one fee. Check opening, closing, holding and funding costs, including whether they change under different market conditions.

This guide explains trading concepts and is not investment advice. Product terms and availability are set out in formal documents.
